CALL FOR MERIT STATUS APPLICATIONS FROM ASSOCIATE FACULTY
Associate Faculty Merit Status is awarded to individuals who have made a professional commitment to IU South Bend based on criteria relating to teaching, course development, student consultation, research, publications, performance, university and community service, and attendance at divisional and professional meetings.
A person is eligible for Merit Status if the person:
- is currently employed by IU South Bend
- has taught the equivalent of six (6) years. Two terms (semester or summer session) comprise one year of teaching
- has submitted a dossier for consideration for promotion to Merit Status prepared in accordance with the guidelines below. Guideline preparation >>
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The award of Merit Status is based on an evaluation in the areas of
- research and/or creative activity
- or service to the university or community.
Evidence of outstanding performance in one area, and satisfactory performance in the second area, is required.
Successful applicants will enjoy the following benefits
- After taking into account overall programmatic concerns and needs and following the assignment of full-time faculty, associate faculty who have attained Merit Status will then receive first consideration in assignment of classes in their area of expertise (up to 50% FTE).
- An increase in base salary of 10 percent per course following attainment of Merit Status.
REVIEW PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES
The Associate Faculty Advisory Committee will review Merit Status applications, and make recommendations to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
- contact the office of the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (520-4183) if there are any questions concerning eligibility
- prepare a dossier with assistance from the unit chairperson in accordance with recommended format
- submit the dossier to unit chairperson for final review by January 26, 2018
- the unit chairperson will then submit the dossier to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs office by February 9, 2018
- the Associate Faculty Advisory Committee will review, evaluate, and make recommendation to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs by March 9, 2018.
- Associate Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award
The Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs encourages College, School, and Division Deans/Directors/Chairs to nominate excellent teachers for the Indiana University South Bend Associate Faculty Distinguished Teaching Award. Nomination of faculty for this award shall be an agenda item for the Academic Cabinet at the first meeting of each Spring Semester.

- Chancellor's Professor
The Chancellor’s Professorship honors a full professor or librarian with highly meritorious performance in all areas of faculty or librarian work. It recognizes a record of extensive accomplishment and leadership in teaching, research, and campus service.
- Distinguished Research Award
The Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall encourage Division Deans/Directors/Chairs to nominate excellent researchers for the Indiana University South Bend Distinguished Research Award. The criteria for "research and creative activities" listed in the "Faculty Promotions" section of the Indiana University Academic Handbook (2001, pp. 71-72) should be followed in defining research. Nomination of faculty for this award shall be an agenda item for the Academic Cabinet at the first meeting of each fall semester.

- Distinguished Teaching Award
The Selection Committee has established a definition of “The Distinguished Teacher” in order to guide the nomination, portfolio preparation, and selection process.

- Excellence in Online Teaching
This award honors one faculty member per year who shows evidence of outstanding online teaching for a fully online or hybrid/blended course. Awardees will receive a one-time stipend of $1,000 and a Certificate of Recognition, and will be featured in the Center for Online Education (COE) website. Individuals who have received the Excellence in Online Teaching Award in previous years are not eligible to reapply.
For this award, a fully online course is defined as a course taught 100% online. This includes courses that are taught as part of the IU Online Class Connect (IUOCC) and/or joint degree programs, or as a fully online course for IU South Bend students.
A hybrid/blended course has 26% to 99% of the course taught online.
- Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award
The Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award honors one faculty member per year who shows evidence of outstanding and innovative use of technology to improve student engagement and learning in any course format (face-to-face, hybrid, online). Awardees will receive a one-time stipend of $1,000 and a Certificate of Recognition, and will be featured on the Center for Online Education (COE) website. Individuals who have received the Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award in previous years are not eligible to reapply.
- Legacy Award
The IU South Bend Legacy Award was established by the IU South Bend Alumni Association to recognize a faculty member for making a difference in the lives of students.

- Lundquist Award
The late Eldon F. Lundquist of Elkhart was a distinguished long-time member of the Indiana legislature. He is remembered especially for his ardent support of higher education in this state. In 1979 his friends established an IU fund in his honor. Since 1985 the income from this fund has been used to make an annual Lundquist Faculty Fellow award. The governing clause from the Instructions for the Administration of the Fund reads as follows.
The award consists of a $5,000 honorarium. Each Lundquist Fellow is expected to present an address at the public ceremony at which his/her successor is announced.

- Trustees' Teaching Award
Applications are requested for the Trustees' Teaching Award (TTA) from tenured and tenure-track faculty, full-time lecturers, and clinical faculty (whose primary duty is teaching) who have taught at Indiana University South Bend for a minimum of two years. These awards are given to those applicants who show evidence of sustained and consistent teaching excellence. These awards will be given to a maximum of seven percent of the faculty on each campus.
The deadline for submitting complete applications to the appropriate College or School is March 1, 2018. Send applications from the Arts to the Dean (Marvin Curtis), Business and Economics applications to the Secretary to Dean (Karla Forsythe), Education applications to the Secretary to the Dean (Peggy Geik), Liberal Arts and Sciences applications to the Secretary to the Dean (Linda Heidrich), Library applications to the Dean of the Library (Vicki Bloom), Nursing and Health Professions applications to the Dean (Fisher), and Social Work (Massat).
- The Chair of each School or College’s TTA committee will forward all of the reviewed applications and a summary of the committee’s ranking of the applications to the Chair of the Academic Senate Teaching Committee by March 24, 2018.
- The Senate Teaching Committee will forward their recommendations to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs by April 15, 2018.
- Award announcements will be made by May 1, 2018.
