Academic Senate Policies and Resolutions
IU South Bend has created this policy so as to establish an effective way to encourage capable, mature, undergraduate students to return to IU South Bend when they have been academically unsuccessful during an earlier attempt at higher education within the Indiana University system. This policy pertains only to undergraduate students who have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree.

To recognize outstanding contributions of associate faculty, a promotional category for associate faculty has been established. The status does not limit or diminish school/college or departmental authority to establish additional policies or continue non-conflicting policies already in effect.

These policies and standards for graduate programs are meant to provide guidance for IU South Bend graduate programs as they create and/or revise their own policies and standards.

The IU South Bend Grade Replacement Policy modifies the current Indiana University Faculty Council FX policy by broadening the replacement option to courses in which a student receives any grade rather than only the grade of F. The purpose of this expansion is to allow an IU South Bend student who has done poorly in a course, even if he or she has not failed the course, to repeat the course and remove the weight of the earlier grade from the student’s cumulative grade point average.

Whereas the Trustees of Indiana University have voted to eliminate domestic partner benefits, resulting in unequal treatment of faculty on the basis of marital status;

Whereas, the Indiana University Handbook states that “for specific information on the promotion process, see campus specific documents” and “Tenure considerations must recognize the diversity of the missions and the contexts of the campuses of the University and must not ignore the mission of the particular unit as defined in its statement of criteria and procedures...” (p. 70), indicating that the IU Trustees and University Faculty Council recognize that each campus must consider its own situation and circumstances in determining such processes; and

1. To be eligible for promotion to senior lecturer, a lecturer must have taught fulI-time, or its equivalent, at IUSB for no less than five years.
2. The basic criteria for receiving a promotion to senior lecturer will consist of displaying 1] excellence in teaching; AND 2] a satisfactory performance either in a] service or b] scholarship; OR in achieving excellence in those responsibilities that have been assigned to them by individual colleges, schools, and units.

The Academic Senate recommends the University to prepare and implement a comprehensive recycling program within all buildings of the IU South Bend campus for at least the following materials: aluminum, glass, corrugated cardboard, hdpe 1 and 2 plastic, and all grades of paper. This program should begin no later than three months from the date of adoption of this resolution.

The University Advisor to the Student Government Association (SGA) shall be returned to an administrative member appointed in accordance to the constitution of the SGA. The Student Affairs committee shall monitor the SGA budget, elections, and officers’ and senators eligibility for office. (10/2003)

- All faculty members shall have Teacher Course Evaluations administered in all of their courses that have enrollments of at least five students every semester that they teach at IUSB.

The resolution below is offered by the Executive Committee for consideration by the IU South Bend Academic Senate on November 22, 2013. House Joint Resolution 6 would add the following language to Section 2. Article 1 of the Constitution of the State of Indiana as a new section: “Section 38. Only a marriage between one (1) man and one (1) woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Indiana. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized.”
