One of the objectives for the Indiana University (IU) South Bend Office of Professional Engagement (OPE) is to further establish the university as a significant engine for social mobility and talent retention in northern Indiana.
The OPE works with area employers including non-profits, start-ups, well-established businesses, and industry leaders to foster partnerships and help IU South Bend students professionalize. As part of these efforts, the OPE has convened a Community Advisory Board (Board) that represents the unique interests of employers in northern Indiana. The Board’s membership reflects diverse voices and professional priorities to provide the university with an up-to-date understanding of ever- evolving community needs. By focusing on employer needs, addressing potential talent deficits in our region, and increasing internship placement opportunities for IU South Bend students, the OPE strives to expand the university’s capacity to graduate work-force ready professionals equipped with the skills employers seek.
Remarkably, approximately 65% of IU South Bend graduates currently remain in the region after graduation. The OPE strives to grow this number, foster community talent retention, and increase “brain remain” by connecting IU South Bend graduates with local opportunities that align with their long-term career interests. The IU South Bend OPE helps students and employers by:
- inspiring collaboration and creating shared understanding between employers and students
- providing students with a space to explore careers and develop tools for professional success
- increasing IU South Bend student internship placements by 10% annually for the next 5 years
- supporting students as they apply, interview, and perform in an internship
- offering professional development education and preparing students to sustain a career
- growing regional talent retention by connecting IU South Bend Students with regional employers and long-term opportunities
