Berlin and Beyond: Dictatorship and Resistance in the 20th Century

The short twentieth century (1918-1989) in Central Europe has been a century of war, dictatorship, devastation, and revolution. This spring course includes ten days of European travel and will allow you to develop a new understanding of this period through personal encounters with two cities: Berlin and Arzberg. You will study the history, read the literature, analyze the culture, and experience life in a metropolis and small formerly West German city on the border between East and West.

Students will enroll in either

• HIST-T 190 Literary and Intellectual Traditions (General Education requirement) | taught in English
• GER-T 390 Literary and Intellectual Traditions (General Education requirement) | portion of classtime in German

• Travel dates | Summer 2018 (two weeks)
• Estimated cost | $2400 (plus three credits) includes airfare, travel in Europe, museums, tours, housing, daily breakfast. Fees may vary slightly as airfare is not yet purchased and accommodation fees vary slightly.

Applications are due November 30, 2017 and a non-refundable deposit of $300 is due December 15, 2017. Balance must be paid in full or by commitment from Financial Aid by May 15, 2018.

This program can accommodate 15 students. Preference will be given on a first come, first served basis. Reserve a spot with an early deposit. All students must be registered IU students with a minimum of sophomore credit status in good standing with a minimum 2.75 GPA.
