Before filing a petition, please read the important information below.
If you wish to proceed with filing a petition, use this Qualtrics form.
Petition for Substitution: This is for transfer students who believe a specific course taken at a previous institution satisfies the objectives for a specific IUSB General Education requirement.
Petition for Exemption: In rare cases, a student may petition for an exemption to a specific General Education requirement. These exemptions usually entail documentation of prior experience (e.g. military, vocational, work, etc.) or disability.
For either type of petition:
- First, meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss. This is required. (If you are not sure who that is, email sbadvise@iusb.edu or call 574-520-4550.)
- Be sure you fully consider the description and learning outcomes for the specific General Education requirement for which you are seeking consideration. You can find that information in the Campus Bulletin.
- When filing a petition, you will be asked to submit relevant documentation, such as the syllabus for the course taken at a different institution and/or other course materials.
Tips/clarifications:
- Petitions will be considered by the faculty committee for General Education. This committee can only approve petitions for campus-wide general education requirements—not for a specific school or program requirement. If you are unsure of the difference, ask your advisor.
- During fall and spring semesters, the committee can usually process petitions within 30 days, often faster. Summer and December petitions could take longer. As such, it’s crucial that you file your petition as early as possible. Delays in filing petitions can unnecessarily delay your degree progress and/or your ability to graduate on time.
