What is Online Education

Welcome to Online Education at IU South Bend. You will find information about courses and programs that are offered, how to apply to the university, what to do after you've applied, and how to find help for whatever issues you may encounter as an online student at IU South Bend.   • Online All (OA) | 100%

    100% of instruction is provided through asynchronous online education in which the student is not bound by place or time100% of instruction is provided through asynchronous online education in which the student is not bound by place or time.

  • Hybrid, Traditional (HY) | 26-75%

    26% to 75% of the instruction is provided through online education; the remainder of the instruction is provided through traditional face-to-face instruction.

  • Hybrid Distance (HD) | 26-75%

    26% to 75% of the instruction is provided through online education. The remainder of the instruction is provided by distance education used to support synchronous interaction between the instructor and student.

  • Distance, Other (DO)

    76% or more of the instruction is provided by distance education used to support synchronous interaction between the instructor and student.

How can I tell if I'm ready to take an online course?

Online students have found the following characteristics essential for online success:

  • the ability to be self-motivated
  • have good computer literacy
  • have good time management
  • have an ability to organize and work independently

Students can find out if they are ready to take an online course by completing the Student Readiness Survey (aka IU Ready).

  • Instructions to Access IU Ready | Already in System
    1. Click on IU READY FOR ONLINE EDUCATION
    2. Click on the STUDENT LOGIN link and enter your IU Username and Passphrase. If you are already in the IU system, you can use the same username and passphrase as your IU email account
    3. Once you've completed the survey and your results are displayed on the screen, you can login again and check your assessment results within the semester at any time.
  • Instructions to Access IU Ready | Not Already in System
    1. Click on IU READY FOR ONLINE EDUCATION
    2. Click on the GUEST LOGIN link
    3. Click on the REGISTER button and complete the electronic form
    4. You can create any username and use any of your email addresses. Be sure to enter your First and Last Names
    5. Click on REGISTER
    6. Return to the GUEST LOGIN and enter the username and passphrase just created. You will now have access to the survey.
    7. Once you've completed the survey and your results are displayed on the screen, you can login again and check your assessment results within the semester at any time.

Degrees Available Fully Online

  • RN to BSN Completions
    • Each of the eight Indiana University School of Nursing campuses across the state of Indiana joined to create the RN to BSN Degree Completion Option. Nursing courses are distance-accessible, using web-based and video technologies rather than requiring students to come to campus.

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS)
    • The BAS degree is offered as an on-campus program and as a fully online program.

  • Collaborative Online Programs Under Development

    IU South Bend has signed memoranda of agreements with other IU campuses to develop these certificate and degree programs, with more being considered, prior to accreditation applications.
