Instructors seeking to have courses approved for general education designation must apply to the Senate General Education Committee. If the proposed course is a new course for the campus or a matching IU course, it must be submitted through CARMin and approved for use on this campus.
To ensure that your course is approved and available for scheduling, please begin the course approval process at least a full semester or earlier prior to the semester you plan to offer the course. This is especially important if you need to gain approval for a new course number through the CARMin process in which case, we would recommend a year’s lead time for getting a new course approved.
The Senate General Education Committee meets during the academic year to review course proposals. This process usually takes a month but can take longer if the Committee requests further information or clarification of application materials.
Proposals to the General Education Committee must include
- relevant General Education course form. All information and questions on the course proposal form must be filled out in detail so that the Committee can make a judgment about the proposal.

During the regular academic year, proposals for general education courses are due on the 10th of each of the following months:
